Learning Objective
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

· Identify the various aspects and perspectives on ageing

· Discuss active ageing and primary prevention strategies

· Develop effective communication with the elderly

· Identify strategies to minimise disruptive behaviours among the elderly with dementia

Course Outline
Module 1: Perspectives on Ageing: What’s Normal?
· Concept of normal ageing
· Myth about ageing
· Realities of ageing in every day practical terms
· Different aspects of ageing and how these different aspects have implications in practice settings

Module 2: Elderly and Play in the “3rd Place”: Active Ageing and Program Planning Opportunities in Community Settings
· Concept of “Play in the 3rd Place” in people’s lives
· Significance of sociability, play and laughter in relation to the quality of life of the elderly
· Potential community sites to create third places

Module 3: Understanding Falls and Falls Management: Everyday Strategies to Help the Elderly Maintain their Quality of Life
· Consequences of falls in the elderly population
· Cause of falling and risks of falling
· Ways to screen an elderly for risk of falling
· Strategies to reduce fall risk

Module 4: Communicating with Elderly with Dementia and Minimising Disruptive Behaviours: Creating Win-Win Situations in Caring for the Elderly
· Problem behaviours among elderly with dementia
· Likely causes of disruptive or challenging behaviours in elderly with dementia
· Essential skills and strategies for communicating effectively with elderly with dementia

Trainer
Dr Michael Cheang, DrPH, has a background in human development, gerontology and health education. He has over 15 years of university teaching experience, and has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2002, he received the University of Hawaii’s Chancellor’s Award for Meritorious Teaching. He was Vice-Chair of Honolulu Committee on Ageing, and has worked with county offices on ageing in Hawaii, Maui and Kauai on eldercare matters. He has developed curricula for trained paraprofessional direct care workers in eldercare. Dr. Cheang is also a certified trainer for the Eden-At-Home workshops.
